The MIO A502: A Cancelled Gem from Mitac
The MIO A502, released by Mitac in 2007, was an anticipated device that unfortunately never made it to the market. Despite being cancelled, this Windows Mobile 6 Professional device still holds a special place in the hearts of many technology enthusiasts.
Dimensions and Design
Weighing in at 135g and with a thickness of 20.7mm, the MIO A502 may seem bulky by today's standards, but at the time, it was considered a compact phone. Its dimensions of 95.7 x 59.6 mm made it comfortable to hold and use with one hand. The phone's body was made of plastic, which may not have been as sleek as metal designs, but it was durable and reliable.
Display and Platform
The MIO A502 boasted a 2.7 inch TFT resistive touchscreen with 256K colors. While its resolution of 240 x 320 pixels may seem low by today's standards, it was impressive back then. The device also featured handwriting recognition and a 5-way joystick for navigation.
Running on Windows Mobile 6 Professional, the MIO A502 was equipped with a TI OMAP 850 chipset and a 200 MHz ARM926EJ-S CPU. It had 64MB RAM and its internal storage varied depending on the region. A SD/MMC slot allowed for expandable memory.
Camera and Sound
The MIO A502 featured a single 2MP camera with LED flash. While this may not seem impressive now, at the time, it was a decent camera for a mobile device. The phone also had a loudspeaker and the ability to download polyphonic or MP3 ringtones. However, it lacked a 3.5mm jack.
Connectivity and Features
The MIO A502 did not have WLAN capabilities, but it did have Bluetooth 2.0, GPS with a SiRF Star III chipset, and miniUSB 2.0 for charging and data transfer. Other features included a car antenna connector, MP3/MP4 player, organizer, Pocket Office, and voice memo and dial.
Battery and Color Options
The MIO A502 was powered by a removable Li-Ion 1050 mAh battery that provided up to 200 hours of standby time. The phone came in a sleek gray color option.
Cancelled But Not Forgotten
Although the MIO A502 was cancelled, it remains a beloved device among technology enthusiasts. Its compact design, decent specs, and Windows operating system made it ahead of its time. While it may not have been released, it will always be remembered as a gem from Mitac.
